Replacement of drainage structures such as culverts and bridges which serve only the property owner and those using that property or development is not the responsibility of Douglas County.

SHOULD DOUGLAS COUNTY BECOME AWARE THAT ANY DRAINAGE STRUCTURE OR BRIDGE SERVING A PRIVATE ROAD, STREET, DRIVEWAY OR FIELD ENTRANCE IS DANGEROUS, THE COUNTY ENGINEER WILL NOTIFY THE PROPERTY OWNER IN WRITING OF THE DANGER AND WILL POST THE BRIDGE AS UNSAFE TO TRAFFIC.

The property owner may, at their expense, have the structure inspected.  Should the inspection prove that the structure is safe, a report sealed by a registered structural engineer shall be sent to the Douglas County Engineer.  Upon review of the report the Engineer may have the sign removed from the structure.

If there is a culvert 36” or under culvert that needs replacing or a new culvert is being installed the County Engineer’s crew will provide the labor and equipment to replace the culvert and replace the drive approach. The property owner is responsible for buying the culvert.
